figure--ground (inf)
a.k.a. asymmetric
a construal or information packaging of two events such that one event (the ground) serves as the reference point for the other event (the figure). Example: in Cindy quit after Jim was promoted, the two events are in a figure--ground packaging, such that Jim's being promoted serves as the reference point for the time of Cindy's quitting. This is an extension of the figure--ground construal beyond spatial relations. This information packaging is found in adverbial clause constructions. (Section 15.1.3)
